How one major sheriff’s facility doubled the capacity of evidence storage space.
Ongoing advances in forensics science and DNA technologies have placed new demands on crime-scene investigations and evidence, extending storage requirements to 55 years for internal affairs cases and to 99 years for homicide cases.
When the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department in West Palm Beach, Florida, recently remodeled its evidence storage areas, it turned to mobile storage to increase the capacity of existing space. By incorporating five Spacesaver high-density mobile systems, the facility doubled its capacity for evidence storage and quadrupled the space for storage of seized weapons.
“The mobile systems have extended our capacity by five-to-six years, allowing us time to explore a more extensive long-term solution,” says Dan McBride, Deputy Director, Technical Services Bureau. “Our job is to help bring criminals to justice, and it’s important to carefully maintain and document evidence for future trials. The Spacesaver mobile storage systems have helped us attain our goal.”
