When the College of Charleston in South Carolina recently opened the $30 million, 140,000 square-foot Addlestone Library, it was with an eye to the future and with a plan to maximize growth of the collections without having to increase the size of the new building.
The Addlestone Library shelves over 500,000 volumes, with about a third of the collection on Spacersaver compact shelving. There is room for a million volumes. Bound journals in the public space on the second floor are housed in three banks of Spacesaver powered compact systems.

Compact mobile shelving helped minimize the footprint of the Addlestone Library. The architect estimates that the compact shelving saved 4,000 square feet.
The architect chose powered mobile with passive safeties after he discovered it was more cost effective and safer than mechanical assist units with in-aisle safety devises.

“By planning for future growth at he time of design and construction, we were able to build capacity into the floor slabs for eventual compact shelving throughout the stack area of the building."
